She bought us brunch, too. :) We were smitten with her (Sco's cringing at the use of that word, I'm sure) and her jewelry, but I only just learned that she's socially responsible, too! She only uses 100% recycled gold and precious metals from Hoover and Strong. And her prices are very reasonable. When my caterer said he might not have the staff to use real dishes, he suggested disposable plates. I said I wanted to have a "green" wedding. He said, "No problem. We can get green plastic plates." Yeah... not what I meant. We started thinking of eco-friendly, disposable options (though it did occur to me to ask people to bring their own plates.) We looked into bamboo plates since bamboo (a grass) is much easier to replace than trees, but it didn't seem to be all that biodegradable. Styrofoam was obviously not an option. Plastic didn't seem very good either. SWEET!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/ShgioZXJmDI/AAAAAAAAAPk/BwfN5rakmro/s400/lanterntest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339055435645818930" />

Sco and I tested them out recently and they look gorgeous!! I jumped around all giddy then and today. I'm glad there's more giddiness than screaming and pulling my hair out. (I am definitely not the first to think of this.) I went to Michael's. They had them on sale for a dollar a pair! And their baskets were on sale! I got 15 pairs of pink flip flops and 2 green baskets with my store credit. (That was from buying tons of silk flowers when I thought I was going to make my own dress and cover it in flowers and then came to my senses and they said "Uh, store credit.") It took 20 minutes to get in and out of the store with what I needed. Only about 2 hours from the moment I decided I wanted to do it and that was because I was still at work when I decided that.

Here they are in the back seat of my car!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/ShV4QaCMDgI/AAAAAAAAAPc/ptYVCDMENF0/s400/1242863666430.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338305156579331586" />
Sorry the picture is so crappy - camera phone, shaky hands, you know...

The quality of the shoes is pretty decent. OOT is a stupid acronym. Out of Town. As in bags - little gift bags for guests coming in from out of town left in their hotel rooms. I really like the idea. (The acronym, not so much.) It's just a little something to make out-of-towners feel welcome after a long trip. After a great post by Miss Peep Toe at WeddingBee, I drove around to three Targets and called my mom to go to her Target in Virginia to get these bags. They're perfect! Eco-friendly, reusable bags - for a dollar. And in pink and green! Now, I have to find stuff to put in them. A bunch of apples won't really do.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/ShgjiY5zxCI/AAAAAAAAAP0/3laVnG8t-R0/s320/misc+027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339056431955166242" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://squidleyandsco.blogspot.com/2009/05/oot-oot.html' title='OOT! Plenty of time to overcome 30 years of walking in converse and flip flops, right?

I've started the process gradually. For a few weeks, I wore 2 inch heels 2 days a week to work. Last week, I wore the 2 inch heels one day and 3.5 inch heels on another day. I actually did quite well.

My darling friend Linda, who lives in heels, gave me an invaluable piece of advice last Christmas. I was wearing a pair of 4 inch heels and dying (but they're so pretty! They're the silver ones!). She told me to rock my weight back into my heels and let my heels take the brunt rather than the ball of my foot. Why had no one told me that in all my life before? These, of course, will be sent to the people who don't really care about that kind of stuff.

Image side

The invitations really came out beautifully. And no RSVP card! Ha! Convention be damned! Responses can be sent via email, phone call, or through our wedding website. It saves paper, postage, energy, and my sanity. Very eco-friendly and Squid-friendly. Of course, there are some people on the guest list, particularly the ones nearing 100 years old who might not be that into RSVPing on the WWW. I'm going to whip up a special response card just for them. And there are still some people I need addresses for! I'm such a slacker.

Text side
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SgD-faIZh-I/AAAAAAAAAO0/LqKt9J6zWic/s400/Text.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332541774350616546" />

There's also an accommodation insert with a map of the wedding site on the other side. There were all sizes, all colors available last night while I was sucking at Photoshop.

But this morning, there were no more size 0 (a couple of my bridesmaids), and 2's and 4's only came in "chartreuse". (a couple of my bridesmaids are in this range) Then, the frenzy began. One of the blondes is a double 0, so she suggested she get a 2 in chartreuse and have it altered. I was texting and emailing all of them at once. I had one blonde waiting to buy the pink because I wasn't sure anyone else could secure a pink. Then, when it didn't look good for more than 2 pinks, one lovely girl suggested we go all green. The blondes were more into the pink until they looked at the color again - actually the green would be better. I'm calling it green, though it's a very yellow green. I wouldn't call it chartreuse, either. Whatev. More frantic texts: "Everyone! Buy green now!"

I think everyone's just about on board. I started the think that maybe I should prescribe the dresses my bridesmaids should wear, since they're all having trouble figuring out what I want or finding what they think I want in stores. There's a J.Crew dress I kind of like and the colors are kind of cool - not exactly what I had in mind, but colors I'd be happy with. So, I started photoshopping their heads on dresses... Then I copied the legs to use on the armless, legless, headless manquin wearing the greenish dress. Sco asked why I didn't just use the polygonal lasso tool to copy the arms, too. I said it was too hard. He said no it's not. I said I don't want to. Fail. Then I cut out the heads and half-ass stuck 'em on the bodies. It's been done before - not a new idea. I'm considering buying a Polaroid Pogo printer. It prints photos on 2"x3" sticky cards and doesn't require an ink cartridge. It uses Zink (Zero-Ink) paper. You can print via Bluetooth from a camera phone or from a digital camera hooked up via USB cable. Guests would take a picture of themselves with the camera attached to the Pogo or their camera phone, print it out, stick it in the album and write a little note.

There are some issues with this... I might need someone manning the "photo booth" for several reasons. One, it's so small, someone could steal it. Because we're not in a secure location, someone could conceivably sneak in and nab the Pogo or the camera or both. Two, people might need some guidance. It's pretty simple, but even with instructions, it might be just intimidating enough that some people won't use it. Three, it only holds 10 sheets of Zink paper at once. Someone might need to be there to reload it.

One option I'm considering is building a box for it and the camera. It would hide the camera and printer, with a hole cut to expose the shutter button on the camera and a slot for the picture to slide out. It would have a door in the back so someone could load the paper occasionally. I still might need someone to stand there for that.

Another potential issue is that people might want to redo their photo too many times if they don't like how it came out. The box thing makes this more likely, I think, because the wouldn't be able to peek at the camera's display before printing.

Pogo image source

Photo booth picture: Sco in a real photo booth

Jars, jars, jars

Every nook and cranny of my apartment is filled with jars. My friends and I have been collecting them for use in our wedding - hopefully as hanging lanterns, but that will depend on what the fire marshal says.

In spite of having so many free jars on hand to recycle in this lovely way, I think I need to buy some jars. Cookie jars, specifically.

As I've mentioned, we're having cookies instead of cake. While the caterer will provide the cookies, he will not provide the pretty jars to put them in. And I don't usually buy my pickles and salsa in 3 gallon glass jars.

So, I'm on the lookout for cute, vintage-ish cookie jars. I'm so indecisive. Do I want a cork cutting board or a bamboo one? Or one of these cutting mat thingies? We don't need much stuff, but the stuff we have registered for is replacing really crappy stuff. I don't want to be stuck with crappy stuff anymore, so I keep changing my mind.

SmartyPig is easy - no decisions required for us or our guests. It's where we've registered for our house fund. It's a public online savings account. Because we don't need much stuff - I mean, we are in our thirties and have a lot of stuff already - we're asking people to consider helping out with our house down payment. Which actually brings me back to the indecision thing - if we're going to be buying a house in the next couple of years, who knows what we'll need? I don't want to register for a bunch of pink towels to match our pink (yes, pink) bathroom in our apartment when we might move to a house with nice taupe walls. And do we really want that much stuff to have to move?

But I do really want knives that don't snap in half when cutting crunchy bread.

image source

Stuff I Suck At

So, here's a list of things I haven't done yet. He has the best cookies, and I asked him to throw in a few extra for "tasting" with my last order from him for a recent work event. A delivery guy brought in the food for my event. He handed me the extra cookies I'd asked for and asked why I'd gotten the extra cookies. I explained that I was considering his company for my wedding. He said, "Oh! You're getting married? When's the wedding?" I replied, "June." He got this wide-eyed look and said, "Wow. Your wedding's in June and you don't have a caterer yet?!"

"Yeah, I know. This is the part I suck most at. I was going to say "this is the part I suck at" but then I realized, I kind of suck at a lot of this stuff. Bridesmaid dresses. In general, I hate bridesmaid dresses because they look like bridesmaid dresses. So... I told my six (yes, six) bridesmaids that they could pick their own dresses provided they stay in a given color range. This is quite a trend lately, and I like it. Then, no one is stuck in an unflattering dress that they'll never wear again. One of my bridesmaids already has one in her closet! I grabbed some paint samples from Home Depot to mail to the bridesmaids. Um, they're still on my desk. I haven't sent them yet. But I did just scan and email them! Here they are:<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 168px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SbKbofuQgeI/AAAAAAAAANU/7jdoaCNA_ts/s200/pinks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310478030635827682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 166px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SbKbkYzlPTI/AAAAAAAAANM/gQiGk4zvQGM/s200/greens.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310477960059632946" />

The green is not totally accurate, but close.

And here is my bridesmaid JS in her dress she has in her closet already.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SbKc93Tth5I/AAAAAAAAANc/qJA8PVQTvYc/s320/prettyNpink.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310479497255815058" />

And here are her sparkly shoes that are the right green.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SbKdLOkEtpI/AAAAAAAAANk/6nKkUgqQvHs/s320/JSshoes.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310479726836758162" />

We think we can dress it up with some jewelry or some other embellishment. I'm missing it right now! Hundreds of brides and their "teams" camped outside Filene's Basement in Union Square in NYC last night be the first ones in when doors opened at 8:00AM. They're ripping thousands of wedding dresses, often heavily discounted designer dresses, off the racks right now and trading and fighting over them. I, happily, am not there. I'm at my office! My dress is in my closet. Although it would have been kind of fun, I'm happy to not be so stressed out right now, fighting with the masses. :)

source

BCBG, it is!!

That's right. She can spot a sale from the other end of the mall, and she spotted one in BCBG. She asked if I minded if we stopped in, and there it was... hanging there for all to see. A great wedding dress asking to be tried on. It fit. Well. But they have such a crappy return policy that I didn't buy it right away. In fact, I had Caroline take this picture and I emailed it to people from the fitting room from my phone asking people for emergency help. Can you see the anguish and indecision in my face?

So, I asked them to put it on hold until Monday, but then Sco and I were in the city and we were near a BCBG, so I tried it on there, too. He liked it enough that I decided to buy it. And it was on sale for $217!!

Now, I have until tomorrow night to return it for store credit, otherwise, it's mine forever, whether I wear it to my wedding or not. The J.Crew one can still be returned at this point. I'm heavily leaning towards the new BCBG. So far, the BCBG has the support of Caroline, my mom, and Sco, but one of my sisters likes the J.Crew better. So, what do you think? <img style="float:left; I originally thought I'd want someone I knew personally that had shot a lot of stuff for newspapers. However, I looked at some people's work that I was familiar with and decided that there wasn't enough "pretty." Then, I found this great photographer who was inexpensive and would give me a cd with all my images right away - unusual for wedding photographers. This is apparently a big deal in wedding photography - the photographer also makes money on making prints and albums and holds your photos hostage while they rake in more and more money. A friend of mine won't have rights to her own wedding photos for 10 years. Ten. Years. So I found a real gem, right? Well, this great photographer specializes in bright sunny photos and doesn't do as well in low-light, outdoor situations. She said she isn't experienced enough with flash and that flash tends to make people look like they're in a cave in these situations. So bummed. But I do appreciate her honesty. So, then I check out her recommendation of a colleague, and that photographer is way expensive and is one that makes you order prints from her. I didn't bother to find out how long she holds your photos hostage. And most recently, a friend recommended a photographer she considered for her own wedding - sounds great, but she's not available. :( Every photographer on the Knot seems to really into these black and white shots with only certain parts in color and other cheesy gimmicks like that. I do have a couple of friends of friends to check out...

So effing gross

My mom called me a few months ago to tell me about this. I'm very excited to say that our lovely, incredible, super awesome niece Ashley will be making our invitations for our wedding! She's an art student at RISD and apparently, it's all the rage to have a 21 year old relative at RISD who will make your wedding invitations and stuff (see this post on WeddingBee). Here's one of her paintings that we might incorporate into the invitations:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SXj8EBh39MI/AAAAAAAAAKs/k8aX2_Oi8ls/s400/ashleypainting.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294258508034208962" />

Sco and I LOVE all her work. And we love her! So that works out nicely. :)

So, now I have to get my act together and figure out what they'll say and what elements I want to incorporate. I did find a helpful post on WeddingBee. (Can you tell I spend WAY too much time on WeddingBee?) I think we can do it! Do you miss Polaroids? Apparently, a lot of people do. I remember being allowed to play with my dad's Polaroid camera at a very young age. So, yeah, I kind of miss it. Someone on Wedding Bee posted a new thing from Polaroid - you can take any digital image and turn it into a sort-of Polaroid. I kind of miss the instant, hold-in-your-hand photos. Here's one of me and lil sis in Tanzania all Polaroid style. Weird coloring and dark corners and everything!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 263px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SW1YdfpOoxI/AAAAAAAAAKk/v-d81nDJU0Y/s320/Tanzania+077-pola.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290982400964076306" />

Burgers. Sco's fine with that as long as it's also "brilliant" as he likes to say. The "brilliant picnic" concept is slowly evolving. I've relinquished the idea of picnic blankets instead of chairs for the reception. My sister brought up that I'll have to have chairs anyway for the ceremony and the reception will be in the same location. She pointed out that it's a little weird to have the ceremony without chairs and that for the reception, "there will be old people there! Do you think that old people want to sit on friggin' blankets?!?" Thank you, dear sister.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SWuBfO6CHGI/AAAAAAAAAKc/oq2OVFjDjY0/s320/justin-marantz-food2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290464560854211682" />So, food. I'm still hung up on hamburgers. I like them. A lot. I'll have veggie options and maybe some chicken, too. I've found a few examples (like this one on Style Me Pretty) of burgers and fries done brilliantly, so I think it can be done by us, too.

Source

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://squidleyandsco.blogspot.com/2009/01/burgers-thats-right-burgers.html' title='Burgers. I started a bridal registry. I went to the gym on Saturday, and feeling all energized, went to Bed Bath and Beyond (heretofore referred to as B3 because the name is so effing long). I didn't take Sco with me because he was working very hard all weekend. Everyone seemed very excited when I said I wanted to start a bridal registry (I talked to about 4 people while waiting a couple minutes for the "specialist" to come to the front.) "Oh, fun stuff!" was said a couple of times. Yeah, well, it wasn't that fun for me. The girl was very nice. She seemed nervous and even said that she gets nervous and to please bear with her. I think she was trained to give you the hard sell on all kinds of stuff like china and curtains and stuff, but luckily, I think she was too nice to push too hard. She really wanted to give me a tour of the store and take me through each section, scanning things along the way. I think I was too nice to push too hard to make it go faster. I wasn't prepared to pick out china or sheets or towels or even a toaster. Plus, Sco and I are both over 30 - we don't need that much stuff. I just beeped a couple of things, but it took 2 hours. I now have 20 items on my registry. I hadn't eaten, I was tired and this was how I was spending my Saturday night. Beeping things in my sweaty gym clothes. I called Sco on the way home and said, "Well. It's done. I went through the torture so you that you don't have to because I love you." Now, we can hopefully just go in, grab a scanner and scan without an escort. Or better yet, do it online from home.

Image Source

This might be it...

Happy new year!!
So... this might be the dress... I'm not a very good (read obsessive) bride, I guess. So, I'm finally going to send out the Save the Date notices today. This will be done via email!! I am trying to save money, trees, time, unnecessary shipping of stuff, the world, etc. I also can't stand reading about Save the Dates on all these bridal sites - they often call them STDs for short. Ew. They say things like "Ha ha ha! I'm giving everyone my STDs today!" I cannot believe some of these cakes! Check out http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/

I was laughing out loud. Unless I'm hanging out with really funny friends, I don't do that often. You have to look at all of them. Especially the baby shower ones... and the foot ones. Why? And P Diddy's record label's anniversary cake! I can't get over it. So funny. And sad. But more funny. The commentary is really what makes it so hysterical to me. The August 8th post has the funniest commentary.

Honestly, I don't like cake that much. I hate icing. Cookies are to die for. Especially chocolate chip. I really want cookies instead of a wedding cake. And milk. I'd have an assortment of cookies, artfully arranged, but no cake. Plus, wedding cakes are SOOOOO over-priced. I want something different and something I will really like.

Trying on Dresses with the Fam

I dragged Mommy, Daddy and Sco back to Saks at Short Hills to try on dresses. Well, they didn't try on dresses. Daddy, in particular, might not be into that. I tried on dresses and they looked on and tried not to be bored. I was devastated that they did not have the Oscar de la Renta dress for me to show everyone. I know I'm not buying it, but still, I wanted to show them the dress. Also, I wanted to see if Mommy had any ideas about how to achieve a similar effect in a dress we could make. So, 4 Claire Pettibones, 1 Carolina Herrera, and 1 Vera Wang - purely an exercise in frivolity.

Something bothers me a bit about the Claire Pettibone dresses. I'm not sure what. The Carolina Herrera one I LOVE, but honestly, it is a departure from my other ideas. The Vera Wang prompted Oscar acceptance speeches and Old Hollywood comparisons. It's a pretty dress, but I'd have to change my whole concept of the wedding. I was having a very PMS, puffy-feeling day. Not really a good thing when trying on clinging satin. Whatever. A phrase came to mind that my French Canadian friend said when feeling similarly, "I ate my harms." This makes more sense when you consider her accent and tendency to pronounce h's where there are none and omit h's that are there.

So, later, I bought some silk flowers at Michael's and experimented with adorning a bustier.

It's a starting point anyway.

Me holding the flower carcasses from whence I wrenched the carnation heads.

A close up of my flowery bosom.

Why?!?

I went and tried on dresses at Saks in Short Hills. I've been collecting glass bottles and jars for lanterns/candle holders and vases. The images below show the kind of thing I have in mind... I'm thinking hanging some in trees with tealights in them and some with flowers or leaves and then some on the tables with flowers and leaves. I'm not really into the big floral arrangement thing. More just a sprig here, a bloom there... and I really like moss. I like lush greens. I'm trying to keep it simple, eco-friendly, and inexpensive. Comments welcome. :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_mOEHKWF6b8Q/SIzCPsv-wGI/AAAAAAAAACM/JcoEGEgVgmk/s400/DecorationIdeas.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227766842436534370" />

Photo credits: Style me pretty/Leigh Miller/Duet Weddings, Domino Magazine, Martha Stewart, Rachel Ray

Midsummer Night's Dream

So, I've talked about this theme with my sister Candis and my mom and more recently with Mary. I have a vision... A Midsummer Night's Dream. No, I don't want any donkey heads or actual fairies, but twinkly lights and lush greens and ethereal dresses are all included in my vision for this wedding. Another great inspiration is Tord Boontje. I love most of his stuff. I know, I don't really sew, and something about biases... blah, blah, blah... I've made loads of friggin' awesome Halloween costumes, some of which involved sewing and I have lots of helpers. My mom and JodyPrinceton have both made their own clothes. I'm going to play with it, while continuing to look for a ready-made dress to buy. If it seems like it's working, I might go with it. If it totally sux, I'll abandon the idea and buy a dress. Or maybe wear my friend Liz's. So, below are a few things for inspiration... Because there are so many people with whom to share so many photos, ideas, stories, etc., I've decided to start a blog for the Squidley-Sco wedding. This will likely evolve into a blog about babies, houses, etc. when we get to those things. I'll be chronicling our wedding planning and asking you all to participate in the process along the way. It will probably be largely about dresses and venues initially, because those are the most fun. I don't like to start with the hard stuff or the important stuff. I start with the fun stuff. I'll put off the hard stuff as long as I can.

I'll post our engagement story soon. It's pretty awesome, and I don't want to get tired of telling it, so I might just point people to the blog once it's up.
